  • The Tribal Affairs Ministry proposed a separate Census for PVTGs in 2027 to ensure accurate demographic data and effective welfare policy formulation.
  • Many PVTGs were underrepresented in the 2011 Census, with several groups counted under larger Scheduled Tribes, leaving sub-sections unrecorded.
  • Accurate enumeration of PVTGs is crucial for schemes like PM-JANMAN, aimed at reducing socio-economic disparities in over 200 districts.
  • There are 75 identified PVTG groups across 18 states and Andaman & Nicobar Islands, with an estimated population of about 45.56 lakh.
  • Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh have the highest PVTG populations, collectively accounting for more than half of the total.
  • PVTGs are identified based on pre-agricultural technology use, low literacy, economic backwardness, and stagnant or declining population trends.
  • The Supreme Court clarified that Article 19(1)(a) does not protect commercial or prohibited speech, including advertisements and hate-inducing content.
  • Social media influencers were reminded of their responsibility to avoid spreading hate or derogatory content, with penalties under IT Rules and Cinematograph Act.
