Highlights of 6 June 2025 Current Affairs
- On World Environment Day 2025, two wetlands from Rajasthan—Khichan and Menar—were added to the Ramsar list, taking India’s total to 91 Ramsar sites, the highest in Asia.
- Rajasthan now has four Ramsar sites: Sambhar Lake, Keoladeo National Park, Khichan Wetland, and Menar Wetland, making the state more important for wetland conservation.
- India will do its next population census in 2027 after a long gap since 2011. It was delayed due to COVID-19 and will be done in two phases.
- For the first time since 1931, caste-related information will be collected in the upcoming census, which may help in better planning of welfare and reservation policies.
- This will also be India’s first digital census, where people can give their information online, and the government can track everything in real time.
- India has been elected to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for 2026–2028, showing the world’s trust in India’s work on global development.
- ECOSOC helps different countries work together on big issues like poverty, education, health, and environment by bringing experts and governments on the same platform.
- The theme of World Environment Day 2025 was “Beat Plastic Pollution,” focusing on the damage plastic causes to nature, especially to water bodies like wetlands.
- Pakistan has been given two important roles at the United Nations: leading the Taliban Sanctions Committee and becoming Vice-Chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee.
- These committees look after things like stopping terrorist funding, banning travel of dangerous people, and making sure countries follow global anti-terrorism rules.
