- The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation revised the base year of the Consumer Price Index to 2024 from 2012 to reflect updated household consumption patterns based on the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) 2023–24.
- January 2026 CPI data showed overall inflation at 2.75% (YoY), with rural inflation at 2.73% and urban inflation at 2.77%.
- The revised CPI basket now includes modern items such as OTT subscriptions, rural house rent, fitness equipment, and babysitting services, while outdated items like VCR and DVD players have been removed.
- CPI is compiled monthly using the Laspeyres Index formula and serves as the key indicator for retail inflation and the RBI’s 4% ± 2% inflation targeting framework.
