RJS Preparation Strategy 2026: Prelims, Mains & Interview Tips

RJS Preparation

Effective RJS preparation requires a clear plan for each stage. For RJS prelims preparation, build a strong command over Bare Acts, practise MCQs and previous-year questions, and revise mistakes regularly.

For mains, focus on answer writing. Prepare Civil and Criminal Law separately. Practise legal application, case laws, judgment writing, charge writing, essays, and timed papers. Analyse every test and revisit weak areas.

For the interview, focus on recent judgments, Rajasthan-specific topics, and general awareness. Prepare your personal profile and practise answering without memorised scripts.

How to Prepare for RJS Prelims?

RJS prelims is a 100-mark paper with 100 MCQs. Your RJS preparation should focus on quick recall, accurate application, and repeated revision.

Start With the RJS Syllabus

Break the RJS syllabus into 3 areas: Law, Hindi, and English. Do not prepare subjects randomly.

Area What to Cover
Law CPC, Constitution, Contract, Evidence/Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023, Rajasthan laws, BNS 2023, BNSS 2023 and other prescribed laws
Hindi Grammar, vocabulary, sentence correction, idioms
English Tenses, articles, determiners, voice, speech, modals, idioms, synonyms and antonyms

Make Bare Acts Your First Priority

Read the relevant Bare Acts carefully. Focus on definitions, exceptions, provisos, explanations, and confusing provisions. Keep short notes only for provisions you find difficult. Avoid making lengthy notes for every chapter.

Prioritise Core Law Subjects

Repeatedly revise CPC, Constitution, Contract, Evidence, Limitation, Specific Relief, TPA, and criminal laws. Cover Rajasthan-specific laws as prescribed. Do not leave smaller Acts until the final week. Complete them early and mark provisions for final revision.

Practise Previous Year Questions

Solve RJS previous year questions after completing each major subject. Check the reasoning behind the correct option. Maintain an error record and review it weekly. In the final weeks, revise these weak areas instead of adding new material.

Use Mock Tests to Improve Speed

Begin with topic-wise MCQs and sectional tests. Move to full-length mocks once most of the syllabus is covered.

Stage Practice
Subject preparation Topic-wise MCQs
Syllabus coverage Sectional tests
Pre-exam phase Full-length mocks
After every test Analyse every mistake

Attempt every mock within 2 hours. With no negative marking, aim to attempt all questions and avoid careless errors.

Keep Hindi and English in Daily Rotation

Do not ignore language preparation. Give both RJS subjects a short daily slot. Practise Hindi grammar, sentence correction, vocabulary, and legal terminology. For English, regularly revise the prescribed grammar areas, vocabulary, idioms, and sentence structures.

Track Important Legal Updates

Revise important judgments, amendments, and legal developments relevant to the syllabus. Keep brief revision notes instead of collecting extensive current-affairs material.

How to Prepare for RJS Mains?

RJS mains is a descriptive exam covering Civil Law, Criminal Law, Hindi Essay, and English Essay. The 2 Law papers carry 100 marks each, and each essay paper carries 50 marks. Your RJS preparation should focus on legal application, answer writing, Bare Acts, case laws, and timed practice.

Know the Mains Syllabus

Divide the preparation into 4 separate areas.

Paper Key Areas
Civil Law CPC, Constitution, Contract, Evidence, Limitation, Specific Relief, TPA, Interpretation of Statutes, Rajasthan laws, Hindu & Mohammedan Law, Partnership, Sale of Goods, Registration, Order/Judgment Writing
Criminal Law BNS 2023, BNSS 2023, IPC/CrPC as prescribed, Evidence, POCSO, Juvenile Justice, NI Act, Domestic Violence Act, Sexual Harassment Act, Rajasthan laws, Framing of Charge, Judgment Writing
Hindi Essay Legal and social topics
English Essay

Prepare Civil and Criminal Law Separately

Study each Law paper as a separate unit. Begin with the relevant Bare Acts. For Civil Law, keep revising CPC, Constitution, Contract, Evidence, Limitation, Specific Relief, TPA, Rajasthan laws, and Interpretation of Statutes. For Criminal Law, focus on BNS 2023, BNSS 2023, and the prescribed special laws. Revise definitions, ingredients, exceptions, provisos, and procedural provisions.

Focus on Legal Application

Mains is not about reproducing sections. For problem-based questions, follow this order:

Issue, Relevant Law, Principle, Application, Conclusion. For direct questions, answer exactly what is asked. Avoid adding unrelated provisions to increase the length.

Start Answer Writing Early

Write 2–3 answers daily from previous papers and completed topics.

Check every answer for:

  • Legal accuracy
  • Relevant provisions
  • Proper structure
  • Application to facts
  • Clear conclusion
  • Word limit

Start with untimed practice. Introduce time limits as you progress.

Practise Previous Year Questions

Solve previous questions topic-wise while studying. Later, attempt complete papers without notes. After checking, identify missing provisions, weak reasoning, poor structure, and time-management issues. Rewrite weak answers instead of simply noting the mistakes.

Master Judgment and Charge Writing

Judgment Writing and Framing of Charge are part of the mains syllabus. Practise both separately. For judgment writing, work on issues, facts, legal reasoning, findings, and conclusions. For charge writing, practise identifying the offence, selecting the applicable provision, and framing the charge correctly.

Use Case Laws Selectively

Maintain short notes containing the case name, issue, legal principle, and relevant provision.

Use case laws only when they directly support your answer. Do not mention cases that you cannot explain accurately.

Prepare Hindi and English Essays Alongside Law

Prepare short notes on legal and social issues. Write 2–3 essays weekly within two hours. Follow the sequence: Introduction, Arguments, Legal/Social Perspective, Examples, Way Forward,  Conclusion. Focus on expression and legal terminology in Hindi, and grammar, clarity, and flow in English.

Practise Full-Length Tests

Begin with subject-wise tests and gradually move to complete papers.

Legal answers2–3 daily
Judgment/charge writing2–3 sessions weekly
Hindi EssayWeekly
English EssayWeekly
Previous-year questionsEvery week

Keep Study Material Limited

How to Prepare for RJS Interview?

The RJS interview is the final stage of selection. It carries 35 marks and assesses legal knowledge, personality, temperament, confidence, communication, general awareness, and suitability for judicial service. Your RJS preparation should focus on clear answers, sound judgment, and calm communication.

Revise Core Legal Concepts

Revise the important areas from prelims and mains:

  • Key legal principles and provisions
  • Recent judgments and amendments
  • Constitutional principles
  • Major civil and criminal law concepts

Prepare Your Personal Profile

Know every detail mentioned in your application. Prepare for questions on your education, interests, achievements, experience, strengths, and reasons for choosing judicial service. Keep your answers natural. Avoid memorised scripts.

Practise Speaking, Not Just Reading

Answer questions aloud during preparation. Practise explaining legal concepts without looking at notes. Keep responses direct. Recording a few practice sessions helps identify hesitation, repetition, and unclear delivery.

Take Mock Interviews

Use mocks to identify specific weaknesses.

Problem What to Improve
Long answers Answer the question directly
Hesitation Practise speaking without overthinking
Weak legal recall Revise core provisions
Poor eye contact Practise natural engagement
Nervous delivery Attempt more mock sessions
Vague answers Support answers with specific points
Guessing Learn to acknowledge uncertainty

Maintain Professional Interview Etiquette

Dress formally and remain polite throughout the interview. Maintain natural eye contact. Do not interrupt the interviewer. Avoid argumentative, dismissive, or overconfident responses.

Show Confidence Without Arguing

Answer confidently but remain open to correction. Do not argue simply to prove your knowledge. If you realise that an earlier answer was incorrect, acknowledge it and correct yourself calmly.

Follow a Final-Week Plan

In the final week, avoid starting large new sources.
