CLAT Exam Subjects List
The CLAT UG subjects would evaluate candidates’ English comprehension, legal and logical reasoning skills, and quantitative techniques. The subject for CLAT also includes current affairs and general knowledge.

Subjects in CLAT UG
Following is the subject-wise list of essential topics for the CLAT exam syllabus 2026 for UG students:
1. English Language
In this section of the CLAT examination, candidates will be given passages of about 450 words derived from contemporary or historically notable fiction and non-fiction writing. The passages would be of a standard that a 12th-grade student can read in about 5-7 minutes.
A series of questions will follow every passage. Candidates must showcase their comprehension and language skills, including their abilities to:
- Read and comprehend the key point discussed in the passage and any arguments,
and viewpoints discussed or set out in the passage - Derive inferences and conclusions based on the passage.
- Summarise the passage.
- Compare and contrast the several arguments or viewpoints in the passage.
- Understand the meaning of several words and phrases in the context used in the passage.
2. Current Affairs, including General Knowledge
This CLAT exam section will contain passages of up to 450 words, each derived from journalistic sources, news, and other non-fiction writing. The questions may include examining legal facts or knowledge talked about in or related to the passage. However, it would not require any extra knowledge of law beyond the passage.
A series of questions will follow every passage. Candidates must demonstrate their awareness of numerous aspects of current affairs and GK, including:
- Contemporary events of importance from India and the world
- Arts and Culture
- International Affairs
- Historical events of continuing significance.
3. Legal Reasoning
In this section of the CLAT 2026, candidates will be provided passages of around 450 words related to situations or scenarios involving legal matters, public policy questions, or moral philosophical inquiries.
No prior knowledge of the law will be required to answer the questions in this section. Students will benefit from a general awareness of contemporary legal and moral affairs and the ability to apply general principles or propositions to the given scenarios.
A series of questions will follow every passage. Candidates must:
- Recognize and infer the principles and rules set out in the passage.
- Apply such rules and principles to several situations.
- Understand how changes to the regulations or principles may alter their application to diverse fact situations.
4. Logical Reasoning
The Logical Reasoning section will include short passages of 450 words. A series of questions will follow every passage. Candidates must:
- Recognize an argument, its premises, and conclusions
- Read and point out the arguments in the passage.
- Analyse reasoning patterns and assess how conclusions may depend on certain premises or evidence and how conclusions may be weakened or strengthened due to an alteration in premises or supporting facts.
- Infer what follows from the passage and use these assumptions to new circumstances.
- Derive relationships and analogies, identify contradictions and equivalence, and assess the effectiveness of arguments.
5. Quantitative Techniques
The CLAT Quantitative Techniques subject in CLAT 2026 will consist of short sets of facts, propositions, or other textual representations of numerical data, followed by a series of questions. Candidates must derive information from the passages and apply mathematical operations to it.
The questions will require candidates to:
- Derive, infer, and manipulate numerical details set out in passages.
