JEE Main Eligibility Criteria 2027: Qualification, Age Limit & Attempts

The JEE Main eligibility criteria decide whether you can appear for the exam and which paper you can choose. They cover your educational qualification, Class 12 passing year, age limit and Class 12 subjects. Check each condition in the JEE Main 2027 eligibility criteria before you fill in the application form. A small mistake can cause problems later, during counselling or admission.

jee main eligibility

Eligibility to appear in the exam is different from eligibility for admission. You may be allowed to write JEE Main but still need to meet extra conditions for a college seat. Always confirm the final rules in the official 2027 notice before you apply, because requirements can change from year to year.

JEE Main 2027 Attempts and Number of Sessions

The National Testing Agency (NTA) will organize JEE Main for the year 2027 in 2 sessions. Here is the breakdown of total allowed attempts, sessions and eligibility rules:

JEE Main 2027 Eligibility for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs

One of the most important points to understand is the difference between JEE Main examination eligibility and admission eligibility. A candidate may be eligible to appear for JEE Main but still need to satisfy additional conditions to secure admission to an NIT, IIIT or GFTI.

  • The candidates should get 75% aggregate marks (General / OBC / EWS) or 65% aggregate marks (SC / ST / PwD) or be in the top 20th percentile of their respective boards (Class 12th).
  • The minimum percentage required to appear in the JEE Main exam is not there like for admission. Performance cut-off is only applicable during JoSAA counseling and admission.
  • The candidates are required to have a total of 5 subjects comprising compulsory Physics and Mathematics, one elective subject (Chemistry/Biology/ Biotechnology or Technical Vocational subject), one language and one optional subject.
  • The selection criteria are those who have passed Class 12 in 2025, 2026 or are appearing in Class 12 in 2027.
  • 50% Home State Quota is based on the state in which the candidate has appeared for and passed his/her Class 12th Board exam (not based on legal domicile/birthplace).

JEE Main 2027 Eligibility for Different Candidates

JEE Main 2027 eligibility may vary depending on a candidate’s academic situation. Class 12 students can apply if they meet the required subjects and other conditions. Class 12 pass-outs, droppers and repeaters can also appear if their passing year falls within the applicable eligibility window.

Students from recognised boards can apply, while candidates with equivalent qualifications should check whether their qualification is accepted. Before applying, candidates should confirm their passing year, subjects and other requirements to avoid eligibility issues later.

Documents Required to Prove JEE Main Eligibility

Candidates should keep their academic and category-related documents ready before filling out the application form. These may include:

  • Details of Class 10 and 12.
  • Information on the qualifying examination and passing years.
  • Category certificate (if applicable)
  • Diabetic Person with Disabilities (DPD) certificate (if applicable)
  • Valid identification details
  • Other documents required during application or admission

All information should match the details mentioned in the candidate’s official documents. Keeping the required records ready can make the application process smoother and help avoid discrepancies during verification.

Common Eligibility Mistakes to Avoid

Candidates should make sure that they meet all the eligibility criteria before applying. Common mistakes include:

  • Entering the wrong Class 12 pass year for the student.
  • Selecting the wrong category
  • Ignoring subject requirements
  • A student who qualifies for JEE Main is considered to have qualified for admission.
  • Confusing the eligibility to sit an exam with the eligibility to get admitted.
  • Using incorrect eligibility data
  • Giving inaccurate information that is not in the official records

Knowing these things beforehand can make the candidates' application and admission process easier.
