The Consortium's CLAT 2026 counselling instructions stated that the fourth and fifth rounds were conducted in May 2026. After the fifth round, the Consortium's central admission process closed, while member NLUs could admit candidates against remaining vacant seats according to their prescribed norms.

Why Do Seats Remain Vacant in NLU?
Seats can remain available after centralised counselling for several reasons:
- Students may freeze higher preferences, resulting in lower-preference seats becoming available.
- An allotted student may not pay the required university fee within the prescribed deadline.
- Students may withdraw from admission after allotment.
- Reserved, domicile, NRI, or supernumerary seats may remain unfilled because eligible applicants are not available.
- Seat availability can also change after cancellations, withdrawals, or candidate non-reporting.
The CLAT 2026 vacancy notices show that vacant seats were available at multiple NLUs after the centralised counselling process. The Consortium's vacant-seat page published notifications received from individual NLUs and directed candidates to contact the respective university when a vacancy notification was not listed.
Vacancies were not limited to one category or programme. Individual notifications specified the programme and category in which seats remained available.
Is There a Sixth Round in NLU Counselling?
For CLAT 2026, there was no sixth centralised counselling round. The Consortium prescribed five rounds, with the fifth round serving as the final centralised allotment. After the centralised process closed, member NLUs could fill remaining seats under their own prescribed norms.
The CLAT 2027 counselling notification will establish the number and schedule of centralised rounds for the 2027 admission cycle. Therefore, candidates should not assume that a sixth centralised round will be conducted.
The institutional process generally involves the following stages:
1. Vacancy Notification
The NLU publishes details of available seats, courses, categories, eligibility conditions, and deadlines.
2. Application and Eligibility Review
The institution receives applications and checks CLAT details, category, domicile, and other applicable eligibility requirements.
3. Merit List and Allotment
The NLU prepares its merit list according to the rules stated in the notification and issues allotments to eligible applicants.
4. Admission Completion
Selected applicants complete fee payment, document verification, and reporting requirements wherever applicable.

How to Apply for NLU Vacant Seats 2027?
There is no single common application form for all NLU vacant seats. Each NLU publishes its own vacancy notification and application instructions.
Step 1: Shortlist NLUs
Select NLUs where the vacancy process matches your CLAT rank, category, programme, and domicile eligibility.
Step 2: Check the Vacancy Notification
Verify the course, exact category, number of available seats, eligibility requirements, application fee, deadline, and application method before applying.
Step 3: Keep Documents Ready
Prepare scanned and original copies of the documents that may be required, including:
- CLAT 2027 Admit Card and Scorecard/Result
- Class 10 and 12 marksheets and certificates
- Category certificate
- Domicile certificate, if applicable
- Photo ID
- Passport-size photographs
- Migration or character certificate
- Fee-payment receipt
The exact document list can vary across NLUs, so follow the notification issued by the concerned institution.
Step 4: Pay the Application Fee
Vacant-seat application fees are decided by individual NLUs and cannot be fixed for CLAT 2027 in advance. Check the applicable amount, refund conditions, and payment deadline in the university's vacancy notification.
Step 5: Submit the Application
Complete the prescribed form, upload the required documents, and submit the application before the stated deadline. Applications may need to be submitted separately to each NLU because vacant-seat admissions are handled institution-wise.
Step 6: Track Merit Lists and Reporting
Monitor the official admission page of the concerned NLU for merit lists, allotment notices, fee-payment instructions, and reporting requirements. Some vacant-seat processes may have short timelines between publication of a merit list and completion of admission formalities.
NLU-Wise Vacant Seats 2027
The procedure and availability of NLU-wise vacant seats can differ across institutions. Individual NLUs publish vacancy notifications specifying the programme, category, eligibility requirements, application process, and deadlines.
CLAT 2026 provides examples of how NLU-wise vacancies were notified. HPNLU published its vacant-seat notification separately and subsequently released multiple merit lists for vacant seats. MNLU Nagpur's June 2026 notification listed vacant seats in its B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) and B.B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) programmes across specified categories.
The CLAT 2026 vacancy record shows that candidates need to check the concerned NLU's notification rather than rely on a single consolidated vacancy figure. Other NLUs may also issue institution-specific vacancy notifications through the Consortium's vacant-seat page.
NRI and NRI-sponsored categories may also have separate vacancy and admission procedures at some institutions. The applicable category, eligibility criteria, fee, reporting method, and deadline should therefore be checked separately in each NLU's notification.

Smart Strategy for CLAT Rank 2000-8000
A CLAT rank in the 2,000–8,000+ range may make vacant-seat admissions worth tracking, but a particular NLU cannot be guaranteed solely on the basis of rank. Vacancy depends on programme, category, domicile rules, withdrawals, and the university's admission policy.

Strategy
|
What to Check
|
|
Match the Vacancy with Your Rank
|
Focus on institutions where the previous vacancy pattern and your CLAT rank make the opportunity viable.
|
|
Check Category and Domicile Conditions
|
A vacancy in one category does not automatically become available to applicants from another category.
|
|
Apply Selectively
|
Apply only where the programme, eligibility conditions, and admission timeline work for you.
|
|
Continue Monitoring
|
Vacancies can change after withdrawals and cancellations, so check official NLU admission pages regularly during the vacancy period.
|
|
Keep Alternatives Ready
|
Private universities accepting CLAT scores and other law colleges can serve as backup options if a suitable NLU vacancy does not become available.

Common Mistakes to Avoid for NLU Vacant Seats
1. Waiting for a Sixth Centralised Counselling Round
The CLAT 2026 centralised counselling process ended after five rounds. For CLAT 2027, follow the official counselling notification instead of assuming that another centralised round will be added.
2. Missing Short Application Windows
Some vacant-seat notifications may allow limited time for registration, document submission, and fee payment. Check the notification promptly and complete each requirement before the stated deadline.
3. Ignoring the Exact Category in the Notification
Vacant seats are offered under the category specified by the concerned NLU. Check the notification carefully to confirm that you are eligible for the particular category before applying.
4. Overlooking Domicile or State-Quota Conditions
Domicile or state-quota requirements can affect eligibility for a particular vacant seat. Check the applicable conditions before submitting your application.
5. Losing Application Records
Keep copies of your submitted application, payment receipt, uploaded documents, and confirmation messages. The records may be required for future reference during the admission process.
6. Leaving an Existing Seat Without Formal Confirmation
Do not give up an existing seat based only on the possibility of admission through a vacant-seat round. Wait until the new admission has been formally confirmed by the concerned NLU.
7. Ignoring Institution-Specific Eligibility Rules
Vacant-seat procedures and eligibility requirements can differ across NLUs. Read the notification issued by the concerned NLU carefully before submitting your application.

Important Points
NLU vacant seats are opportunities that arise after centralised counselling or following withdrawals, cancellations, non-payment, and unfilled category-wise seats. CLAT 2026 provides the latest completed reference, with five centralised counselling rounds followed by institution-level vacant-seat admissions.
For CLAT 2027, candidates should not rely on a fixed vacancy number, sixth-round assumption, or previous-year seat matrix. Monitor the Consortium and individual NLU vacancy notifications, verify category and domicile conditions, prepare documents in advance, and apply within the specified institutional deadline.
